Spinell Astilbe - Astilbe x arendsii 'Spinell'
Spinell astilbe has long loosely branched crimson-red panicles of flowers that are held clear of the green foliage. Ferny new growth is red in early spring and very attractive, turning green as the season progresses. Makes a bold clump. This is a very popular plant in leaf and flower. This perennial thrives in moist, shady locations and is popular for border plantings or alongside water areas. Plant in groups for maximum impact. Excellent for drying or to cut and place fresh in the vase.
Plant in cool, rich moist soil. Feed in spring with an all purpose fertilizer before new growth begins. Remove tired flower spikes throughout the season to promote new blooms. Divide every few years as needed in fall to maintain plant vigor. Cut back in spring; the old foliage helps protect the plant from winter damage.
