Plant of the Week - June 21, 2012 Barberries

Barberry

Barberry is also known as berberis and is a popular landscape plant.  Barberries are well known for their wiry branches and their sharp thorns.  Barberry is commonly used in hedges, shrub borders and as foundation plants.  You can create a natural barrier or living fence with these shrubs because the thorns deter people and animals from going into spaces you don't want them.

Barberry bushes are quite drought tolerant and make a sturdy garden shrub.  Considered easy to grow and maintain because they can tolerate a wide variety of growing conditions.  Bylands grows hardy barberries for zones 3 and 4.

Numerous varieties of Barberry bushes are available that feature attractive foliage with colors ranging from deep magenta all the way to light green.  These shrubs flower in the spring and then form tiny red teardrop berries, which will remain on the plant well into the fall months with some persisting through the winter.  These berries provide seeds for small mammals and birds to eat in the colder months.

Barberries transplant easily and require relatively little pruning in general, but are quite tolerant to it if needed.  In order to maintain the shape of your Barberry or to remove dead branches, you can prune them any time, keeping in mind Fall and Winter are the best months to do this.
