Physical and mental health benefits of gardening

 

Studies have found that the mental health benefits of gardening are extensive. Not only can regular gardening reduce problems like depression and anxiety, it can also reduce stress, high blood pressure and improve your overall physical fitness.

Gardening exercises your mind as well as your body, we move around digging, planting, weeding and watering. At the same time it utilises a number of our brain functions and includes, learning, problem solving and sensory awareness. Planning the layout of a garden, researching different plants that thrive in our climate and soils, and learning gardening techniques encourages us to think through problems, devise solutions and be creative. Keeping our minds active. If we choose an exercise we like and that’s convenient for our lifestyle, we are more likely to do it; and we can eat the results!  Other great aspect about gardening is that it can be done by people of all ages. Having a living thing to care for gives us a sense of responsibility and sense of self worth. The therapeutic value of gardening can help people connect with others, reducing feeling of isolation and keeping us active.

Gardening connects us to nature and the rhythm of life. By forcing us to slow down and relax. It teaches us to live in the here and now. We may not have time to take long nature walks, but we can spend a little time in our gardens, just viewing a garden can have positive psychological benefits.

To say that gardening encourages us to exercise and spend time outdoors might seem a statement of the obvious, but it is worth reminding ourselves that what’s good for the body is also good for the mind.
