POSITION OVERVIEW:

REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • University/College education in Business, Sales, Marketing or Horticulture or equivalent sales experience.
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
  • A minimum of 2 years of territory sales and marketing experience an asset.
  • Strong computer skills, specifically within Microsoft Office Excel.
  • Ability to travel to customer locations and home office, a must.

Lead Greenhouse Grower

 

Bylands is seeking a Lead Greenhouse Grower to lead our growing Greenhouse facilities.  We are looking for an experienced manager with strengths in leading people. 

POSITION OVERVIEW:
This position is responsible for the day-to-day management of the Greenhouse facilities, with a focus on the perennial and annual departments.  The Lead Greenhouse Grower will have input into, and follow the production plan and ensure that all perennials and annuals are grown to the high quality standards of Bylands Nurseries Ltd. in the most economical, efficient and environmentally friendly manner.  This role will be leading a team of up to 30 people during peak work periods.

  • Plan and manage the varieties and quantities of annuals/ perennials indicated in the production plan on a schedule that provides a continuous supply of product available for sale. 
  • Ensure the excellent health and growth of plants including proper watering, fertilization, pruning, spacing, spraying, integrated pest management (IPM), and temperature control.
  • Plan and organize the departmental shipping process and ensure that assembled orders are weeded, labeled, packed and delivered to the loading area in accordance with the shipping schedule.
  • Management of goods, materials, supplies and equipment required for the department’s production and shipping processes.
  • Ensure that all buildings, structures and equipment in the Perennial Department are properly utilized and maintained.

To achieve this, you will be working to ensure the department has the best team possible.  This includes forecasting, scheduling, hiring, training, evaluating and developing employees. You will also ensure the safety of employees through compliance with Environmental and Health and Safety regulations and maintaining an attitude that all incidents are preventable. 

REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Highly motivated, self starter with excellent communication and leadership skills
  • Diploma or Degree in Science/Horticulture/Production or equivalent experience 
  • Minimum of 5 years of supervisory and nursery industry/horticulture experience
  • Practical experience and knowledge in plant cultivation and identification
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and production/inventory management systems
  • Pesticide Applicator’s Certificate
  • Available to work evenings, weekends and holidays, as well as, able to work physically in a role requiring extended periods of time standing, walking, bending and reaching in a wide range of weather conditions (hot, cold, wet, windy)
  • Fluent in written and spoken English; Spanish an asset

Nursery Production Worker

We are seeking workers for general nursery and field production work. These positions include the following agriculture and nursery work:

  • Assist in pruning trees, shrubs and plants.
  • Mix and prepare soil.
  • Plant bulbs and seeds.
  • Pot and re-pot plants.
  • Transplant seedlings or rooted cuttings.
  • Assist in grafting activities in the fields.
  • Dig up wrapping rootballs of trees and shrubs; tying trees to stakes.
  • Water and tend to plants, lawns and/or gardens including hoeing; weeding.
  • Labelling, moving and loading plants on carts for shipping to customers.
  • Operation of farm equipment such as tractors, forklifts and hand tools may be required.

This position is located in West Kelowna, BC.  It is full-time and will require working 6 days per week and extended hours including holidays. It will primarily be outdoors and involves working in all weather conditions (hot, cold, wet, windy). This is a physically demanding position that requires being on your feet all day, as well as frequent bending, reaching, lifting and walking.  Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.

Starting wage will be current minimum wage for BC, $12.65 per hour.

Production Supervisor (Bilingual) – Container Fields

Bylands is currently seeking a Production Supervisor to lead a crew of predominately Spanish speaking, seasonal nursery workers in the Container Fields.  We are looking for an experienced supervisor with a horticulture or agriculture background and strengths in leading people. 

POSITION OVERVIEW:
Reporting to the Production Manager, the Production Supervisor – Container Fields will work with seasonal staff to ensure that all plants are grown to the highest possible quality while balancing economic, efficiency, environmental and health and safety standards. 

On a day-to-day basis, you will be expected to:

  • Plan, organize, direct and control the operations of Bylands container fields
  • Establish the environmental conditions required to grow trees, shrubs, flowers and plants, and design planting and care schedules accordingly
  • Supervise and participate with staff in planting, transplanting, feeding and spraying stock; Identifying and control of insect, disease and weed problems
  • Supervise, direct and train employees in day-to-day activities ofthe seasonal working staff (SAWP Program) as well as set work schedules, timesheets, coaching and orientation.  This requires speaking fluent Spanish and English
  • Implement the crop cycles of the production plan to ensure continual production of sufficient plant material to meet anticipated future sales demand
  • Work closely with the Shipping Coordinator, including helping with any logistical and supply chain needs of the organization
  • Maintain all yards, buildings and equipment in a clean, safe and good working order that reflects Bylands Nurseries in a professional manner to the team and public
  • Maintain a safe and healthy work environment through the effective implementation of the Bylands Health and Safety policies and procedures

To achieve this, you will be working to ensure the best team possible.  This includes forecasting and scheduling, hiring, training, evaluating and developing employees.You will also ensure the safety of employees through compliance with Environmental and Health and Safety regulations and maintaining an attitude that all incidents are preventable.  Your work will enable the company to continue supplying high quality plants to our customers and achieve our planned growth of the Production Department.

REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be fluent in Spanish and English
  • Highly motivated, self-starter with excellent communication and leadership skills
  • A degree in Horticulture/Agronomy with Apprenticeship or equivalent work experience
  • A minimum of three years of related nursery experience -  supply chain an asset
  • Demonstrated skills in time management, scheduling, supervision of teams
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and nursery production/inventory management systems
  • Pesticide Applicator’s Certificate
  • Available to work evenings, weekends and holidays, as well as able to work physically in a role requiring extended periods of time standing, walking, bending and reaching in a wide range of weather conditions (hot, cold, wet, windy).  As this is a farming environment, long hours will be required and days off will be extremely limited during the peak seasons.
